WASHINGTON, U.S. - A month after accusing Twitter of shadow banning members of his administration, the U.S. President Donald Trump again turned his ire on social media sites, blaming them of censorship of conservatives.
On Saturday, Trump took to Twitter to allege that social media companies are discriminating against prominent conservatives and declared, We wont let that happen.
Trump wrote in a two-part tweet, Social Media is totally discriminating against Republican/Conservative voices. Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump Administration, we wont let that happen. They are closing down the opinions of many people on the RIGHT, while at the same time doing nothing to others... Censorship is a very dangerous thing & absolutely impossible to police. If you are weeding out Fake News, there is nothing so Fake as CNN & MSNBC, & yet I do not ask that their sick behavior be removed. I get used to it and watch with a grain of salt, or dont watch at all.
Earlier in July, Trump told his 53.8 million followers on Twitter that his administration will look into the practice of shadow banning on Twitter - a practice in which a website reduces the visibility of certain people or groups on the platform.
Trump alleged that this was happening to prominent conservative voices.
His accusation wasnt new, Conservatives have long complained about unfair treatment on social media platforms, which they see as bastions of Silicon Valley liberal views.
Trump wrote, .Too many voices are being destroyed, some good & some bad, and that cannot be allowed to happen. Who is making the choices, because I can already tell you that too many mistakes are being made. Let everybody participate, good & bad, and we will all just have to figure it out!"
On September 5, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, along with executives from Facebook and Google, is set to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee to discuss Russian election interference - where the issue raised by the President are set to be brought up.
A source familiar with the discussion noted that the Staff of the House Energy and Commerce Committee have raised the possibility of subpoenaing Dorsey to testify before the panel on the company's data and content policies.
However, in an apparent response to Trumps accusations, Dorsey defended his company's practices in a CNN interview.
He argued, "Are we doing something according to political ideology or viewpoints? We are not. Period. We do not look at content with regards to political viewpoint or ideology. We look at behavior."
Dorsey explained, "I think we need to constantly show that we are not adding our own bias, which I fully admit is left, is more left-leaning."
Meanwhile, accusations against Twitter emerged a day after the Trump administration charged Facebook with violating housing discrimination laws.
Facebook has, however, denied the charge.
