Virginia Tech opted to end its season Friday rather than wait to be asked to the National Invitation Tournament.
The Hokies ended their season with a 95-89 overtime loss to Wake Forest in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament on Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C. They finished with a 19-13 (8-10 ACC) record.
'Given the current health status of members of our roster and the need for a number of our student-athletes to focus on recovery and preparation for their professional careers, we believe it is in the best interests of our players and the long-term direction of our program to conclude our season at this time,' the team announced on social media.
Head coach Mike Young's squad lost five of its past seven games.
Leading scorer Amani Hansberry (14.3 points per game) missed the tournament game with an injured left leg. Starters Tobi Lawal and Tyler Johnson both missed significant time during the season due to foot injuries.
'While we respect the tradition and competitiveness of the NIT, the standard for our program remains clear,' the team statement continued. 'Our expectation is to compete in the NCAA Tournament. Our staff and student-athletes are already focused on the work ahead, and we are committed to doing everything necessary this offseason to return Virginia Tech to the Big Dance in 2027.'
The Hokies have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2022.
