Dillon Dingler hit a three-run homer, Kevin McGonigle blasted his first career homer and the host Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins with an 8-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Kerry Carpenter supplied a two-run shot for Detroit. McGonigle reached base four times, including three hits, and scored two runs. Riley Greene, who drove in four runs on Saturday, added two hits and scored twice.
Tigers ace Tarik Skubal didn't allow a hit until Austin Slater's bloop single to center in the sixth. Skubal (2-2) allowed one run and two hits while walking two and striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings. Kyle Finnegan and Connor Seabold got the last seven outs.
Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (2-1) gave up seven runs and 10 hits in six innings. Alcantara had allowed just two earned runs in his first three starts.
Otto Lopez had both Miami RBIs with a solo homer and a sacrifice fly. Slater had two hits while Jakob Marsee added a triple and scored the other Marlins run.
The Tigers staked Skubal to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Colt Keith and Greene had two-out singles before Dingler smashed an 0-2 changeup over the left field wall for his third homer this season.
The score remained that way until McGonigle hammered a first-pitch Alcantara fastball over the right field wall during the fifth inning.
Detroit extended the lead to 7-0 in the sixth. Greene smacked a leadoff single and, one out later, Carpenter reached down and golfed a sweeper over the right field wall. Spencer Torkelson, Zach McKinstry and Javier Baez had consecutive singles to account for the other run in the inning.
Miami scored in the seventh on Marsee's triple to right and Lopez's sacrifice fly. Skubal departed after striking out Connor Norby.
The Tigers tacked on a run in the eighth on two-out singles by McGonigle and Gleyber Torres and a wild pitch from Tyler Phillips.
Lopez hit his homer with one out in the ninth just beyond the left field wall.
