Colorado Rockies left-hander Jose Quintana left with one out in the bottom of the second inning in his start against the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Colorado later announced Quintana was experiencing left elbow discomfort.
The Rockies trailed 5-0 but had no one warming up at the time of Quintana's abrupt exit. A trainer came out after he gave up a blistering ground-rule double to Ketel Marte, and Quintana walked off shortly thereafter.
Quintana, 37, spent a couple of weeks on the injured list in March and April due to a hamstring strain. After being tagged for six earned runs on six hits Sunday, his ERA ballooned to 5.27.
Blas Castano replaced Quintana and pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief.
