Kyle Schwarber and Brandon Marsh homered while Jesus Luzardo tossed six strong innings as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies blanked the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Monday.
Luzardo (4-4) worked in and out of trouble for half his stint, permitting four hits and a pair of walks while fanning six in a 104-pitch effort. Three relievers finished up, with Jhoan Duran handling the ninth inning his 10th save of the year and the 100th of his career.
Griffin Canning (0-3) was a tough-luck loser, pitching a season-high 6 2/3 innings and allowing just three runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. But San Diego went hitless in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Four of those at-bats came in the bottom of the first after Fernando Tatis Jr. and Miguel Andujar opened the frame with singles. Shortstop Trea Turner bobbled Xander Bogaerts' potential double-play grounder for an error that filled the bases with no outs.
Luzardo bailed Turner out by fanning Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill, then inducing an inning-ending grounder from Nick Castellanos.
In the third, Tatis singled and Andujar walked before Bogaerts' grounder to short forced Andujar at second. Luzardo squashed the rally by getting Machado to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Andujar killed a fifth-inning threat with a double-play ball after Rodolfo Duran was hit by a pitch and Tatis walked.
Meanwhile, Canning cruised along for most of the day, except when facing Schwarber. The Phillies slugger socked his major-league-high 21st homer over the right field wall with one out in the first, then walked in the fourth.
Schwarber started the seventh with a single, and Bryce Harper followed with a walk. Canning coaxed a double-play grounder from Alec Bohm before Marsh pulled a 2-0 slider an estimated 368 feet over the right field wall for his fifth homer.
Tatis and Ty France each collected two of San Diego's five hits. In the past two games, Tatis has reached base seven times but has not scored a run.
